Dinner with Shann

Le Pelican

A few weeks ago I enjoyed an impromptu weeknight dinner at Le Pelican with my boyfriend and his Mum. A French restaurant in Surry Hills, that emulates five star dining but in a beautiful casual courtyard setting.

The staff were only too happy to recommend a favourite dish and tell us about the intricate details of the cooking process. Fascinating and divine.

I ate the Le Canard, duck two ways like a tagine. This is Le Pelican’s signature dish and I doubt that it will ever fail you. My boyfriend got Le cochon, crispy sucking pig with basquaise, ravilla and Padròn. My boyfriend’s mum ordered L’épeautre, Spelt grain risotto, tomato and crispy vegetables. She described her dish as ‘just beautiful…I’m going to cook this at home!’ Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we ordered dessert…

I ordered Le Vacherin, an intricate strawberry and rhubarb meringue with lemon gel and olive oil sorbet. Olive oil sorbet…YUM!

This restaurant is well worth a visit, especially given French restaurants seem few and far between in Sydney. Go for an early dinner and sit out the back in the courtyard. You might catch the last bit of sun, and for a minute you might just think you’re actually in France.

Dj’s verdict:

What a delightful dining experience. Normally I am wary of over-paying for French cuisine, but this evening was easily worth it. The authentic atmosphere and personal touches from the head chef made all the difference.
